A spooked family caught a town centre’s Christmas spirit on camera at Middlesbrough’s (UK) festive lights switch-on.
Peter Conway captured the ghostly, witch-like silhouette in Centre Square while snapping his eight-year-old grandaughter, Sinead.
He said he couldn’t believe his eyes when he spotted the spectre apparently hovering behind the youngster.
“When everybody had a look, they all said it looked like a ghost behind her,” he said.
“When I saw that I just couldn’t believe it.”
Peter, a 56-year-old security guard from Middlesbrough joked: “I know we call her a little witch every now and again but she said ‘it’s my guardian angel’.”
Sinead, who also lives in Middlesbrough, said every time she looks at the picture it “freaks her out”.
Peter added that no one else was in the frame when he took the picture on his phone camera.
When he had the picture enlarged, he said the ghoulish figure, which looks to be floating on a broomstick, was even more obvious.
It’s not the first supernatural encounter around the historic square, which opened as Victoria Gardens at the turn of the 20th century.
Ian Stubbs, a local historian and assistant curator of Middlesbrough museums, said the area is allegedly a well-known haunt for apparitions.
A number of people have reported a ghost in the town hall.
Named Oscar, it is believed to be the spirit of a prisoner who was thrown down the stairs and broke his neck when the building was used as a court and prison.
He said: “I know of people, councillors and office staff who say they have felt a presence. And when people have been sitting in offices, heavy doors have swung open on their own.”
