Ghostly Apparitions?
Doug8164 writes: My first experience was while I was in the Army. I was taking part in a training exercise which is done in a mocked up village made to look like a village in Northern Ireland. I was playing part of the "civilian population" training soldiers who were due to deploy to the province. Some of the houses in the village are set up to be a sort of one up, one down affair and 2 people would "live" in these houses during the exercises. The upstairs was just a platform with two beds; the downstairs was just a concrete room with a table and 2 chairs, very, very sparse. The guy I was bunking with went to another area to take part in some training so I was left alone in my house. This never bothered me, but the first night I was there alone I woke up hearing what sounded like my Mum and my niece calling my name from downstairs, both are still alive but for some reason I got completely freaked out, I couldn't move a muscle which isn't normal for me. Then I heard a fierce growling and it sound like there was something downstairs that was getting angrier and angrier. I then noticed that on the bed on the other side of the room there was a woman and teenage girl, I saw them so clearly. The girl had long dark hair and the woman had a bob in a 40's style and both were dressed in 40's era clothing and I noticed there was a man sat on my bed next to me. He had dark hair also but was wearing a white collarless shirt and trousers with braces, and I got the impression that he was from an earlier time than the other two. As I looked at him he smiled and said "Don't worry, we'll look after you". Then he put his hand to my head and I woke up and it was morning. Normally I would put this down to a dream but it was so vivid and I felt the fear so strongly it was unbelievable, I've never felt so afraid in my entire life as I did during that experience. Sleep paralysis is another explanation; my mind may have made me come up with these images and sounds in order to help me deal with the fear at not being able to move.
Experiences in Colorado
Naveed83: Between the time when I was a toddler until I was 13, I lived in Colorado Springs, CO. The house my family lived in was a two story, 5 bedroom house. Now my mom had numerous experiences in that house, as well as my brother constantly having night terrors that practically stopped when we moved.
Anyways, on numerous occasions my mom would hear running up and down the stairs that connected the two floors. One night she heard what sounded like our cat in the kitchen getting into our dogs food and spilling it all over the floor. When she went in there to chase the cat away there was no mess and no cat.
On another occasion my mom woke up one morning and went to let the dog out only to find a floor vent by the door had been pulled out and sitting on its top next to the vent.
The strangest things that happened were things disappearing and reappearing in strange spots. One of the events like that that stands out in my mind is when my sister had lost her favorite doll. My mom searched everywhere and couldn't find it. Finally she bought her a new one. Anyways a few months later on Christmas eve, a family friend was over and was sitting in a chair in the living room. After he had been sitting there awhile and went to get up, the doll was underneath him. My mom even went and found the new one to make sure that that one wasn't it.
The final thing that was experienced by any of us there was when we were moving out. During our last few days there a strange rotten fish smell just permeated the upstairs. We were never able to find a legitimate source for the smell, which seemed to come and go in varying intensities. Even when everything room was empty the smell was there.
As for my brother's night terrors, I don't know for sure if they were connected to whatever was in the house, but I've often wondered if they were since they only happened like twice after we moved out of there.
I just remembered a possibly related incident as I was typing the above. I was like 9 or 10 and my youngest brother, Brandon, was going to cut a piece of string I was holding. Anyways, he wound up deliberately cutting my fingers. When my mom asked him why he did it, he said something along the lines of "I'm scared, the devil is here." Oddly enough Brandon was the one who had the reoccurring night terrors. He was also rather insightful to stuff when he was younger, almost aware of things the rest of us weren't aware of.
Voices in the Dark
GypsyGirl: Well, I just wanted to tell you some exciting news. I have moved out of my mom’s, into a warehouse that is being renovated into a flat. Well, my neighbors are a young gypsy couple (Motorcycle Club) and they have a 4 month old baby girl. Well, the other night, Leslie, and I were sitting and watching the baby in her swing, when all of a sudden we notice her eyes, and the movement of her head changes direction, and she starts laughing as if someone is playing with her. So we continue to watch her just coo and laugh, and then we notice that the little toys that are on top of her swing are going an opposite motion as if a hand was moving them around so that she can look at a particular thing.
Well, we chalked it up to the baby just being that - a baby. 10 minutes later, the heavy front metal door, just opens all by itself, as if it was pushed open by someone. Well , that startled Leslie just a bit, and she gets up and looks outside, seeing no one, and she turns and looks at me, and says " I guess we have ghosts in here.", saying that half jokingly, and I just smiled, because the warehouses are very old, built in the 40's and 50's. Robert, my new "boyfriend" came up and said it was just the draft coming through the house, and Leslie and I told him he was nuts, because the front doors are very, very heavy metal shop doors.
So last night I went to sleep by myself for the first time in the week that I have been there, and it is kinda spooky if you don’t have anyone with you to keep you company. The ceilings are 10 ft high, but the walls are solid. Well, it was about 12 , and I had just settled into my bed, when I heard the first voice. Then another, and then laughing right in my ear. I know that I was pretty tired, but I could almost swear there were all kinds of voices. Lots of whispering, but the laughing one kinda bothered me, more teed me off than anything, so I finally sat up and stated loudly: “Look I am sorry if me living here is disturbing you, but I really was thrown into living here , and would appreciate you taking your conversations else where.”
I finally fell asleep, but you know, there is a grave yard ,not even a 4th of a mile from there, and my grandparents are also buried there. Too weird, don’t you think? Maybe the spirits are traveling through. I don’t know, any thoughts?
The Whistling Ghost
Gwinni: A number of years ago, my sisters and I began to suspect that Mum was becoming confused, perhaps the beginnings of dementia. When she started to report that her flat was haunted (just to the family) of course, we were a little sceptical, but I have always had a belief in such things, so there was a part of me that thought it might just be possible Mum was right. This went on for some time, with Mum becoming more distressed about her haunting, and she tended to tell me, usually, as she knew I would take her seriously. Despite things I did to try to reassure her, she was still very afraid.
One evening, I was visiting her-we were chatting, and she began again to talk about her ghost. She told me that this ghost shouted at her, moved things and even whistled, sometimes. A moment after she had said this, I heard a sharp whistle that came from thin air between us! I found this chilling-it was as if the ghost was mocking us. She turned to me in triumph and said:" You heard that, didn't you?" After that, if I ever had to visit her flat alone, I kept the door wide open for a quick exit, and did what I had to do quickly, as I didn't like the atmosphere at all.
Before Mum moved into the flat, there had been a fairly quick turnover in residents for that particular flat. I wonder why?
My Haunted House
Gerry: As you will all know, I once lived in a 'haunted' house for around 6 years. We eventually moved from the house not due to its haunting properties, but because my mother had a baby at 40 years of age and we had run out of bedrooms!
I was the eldest child and only girl in a family of 6 children, yes I had 5 brothers. So bedrooms were in short supply. We had 3 bedrooms upstairs, including the dreaded 'box-room' in which I had my ghost experience. I refused to sleep in there as I got older. So my father turned the downstairs dining room into a bedroom for me.
When I was 17 years old, I had a friend called Nicki - we were almost like sisters. I spent time at her house (she lived with older parents and had a grown up brother). Her house was a haven away from younger brothers. But on one occasion and this was her only time spent overnight, we had been out to a party and arrived back home around 12 am. I had a double bed downstairs in the converted bedroom and she decided not to drive home. She had prewarned her parents that she might be staying. We stayed up chatting until about 1 am then retired to bed. I suppose we had been asleep for an hour when we heard 'running' up the stairs and down the stairs. She prodded me and asked what was going on. I had not prepared her for our unseen visitor.
It was then that I told her that the house was strange and might be haunted. She freaked! We lay there in the dark listening to the commotion outside. A door closed to the front room and we could see under the bedroom door that the light in the hallway had come on. Nicki by this time was freaking out badly, saying she wanted to go. It was much too late and I persuaded her to stay. In all this time, nobody upstairs asleep had got up, which seemed odd. I was used to things being strange and funny noises but these noises were LOUD. We both crept out of bed and slowly opened the door. The noise stopped and there was no light on. We went back to bed and lay there talking gently and reassuring ourselves. Suddenly there was a super huge SLAM of the back door. I could feel Nicki shaking under the covers - still everyone in the house slept on oblivious of what was happening. Then we heard the kettle being filled up from the kitchen tap and the gas being turned on - it was like a dream but so scary. By this time, it was around 4 am and we had had about half an hour's sleep.
Well to get to the end of the story. We could not sleep at all - we kept the bedroom light on and waited for dawn. Miraculously by the time dawn came, the commotion had died down and the house was quiet. In around 4 hours we had heard, footsteps, muffled talking, lights going on and off, doors slamming and a kettle being put on. When my mother got up around 7 am, she went crazy at me! 'Do you know that we have slept all night with the back door unlocked and open?' Despite my desperate pleas, she did not believe me!!
Oh and Nicki never did stay at my house again!! Wonder why?
Haunted Holiday Cottage
Ruby: We live in a stone house that is part of a converted hotel. It was built in the early 1800's. We have heard many stories about sightings in this property, but my partners experience was the freakiest of them!
We actually own the house next door too, which we run as a holiday let. In April 05, my partner was having a bath in the holiday let. It was night time with the ceiling light on, and while he lay there soaking with his eyes closed, he suddenly realised that the light had changed in the room as if someone had opened a door. With a start he opened his eyes, and saw a man dressed in Victorian clothing ... long black jacket and tall black hat, walking towards him. The man was looking straight ahead but as he drew alongside my partner he turned his head towards him and stared at him as he continued walking. He disappeared through the airing cupboard ... into our house next door!
During this period, my partner spent some time sleeping in this house. One night he had just gone to bed, and suddenly realised that there were three people standing in the corner of the room. They were grouped together in a triangle. One was turned in a different direction but two were facing him and appeared to be watching him in bed. One was the same man in the tall black hat, the other two were women and he thinks one was dressed as a maid. He also experienced exactly the same thing a second time.
I have experienced a few things in the holiday let, but nothing anywhere near as exciting as his ... Thank God! When we were renovating the property I was sitting on the stairs painting the banister rails one night and had an overwhelming feeling of being watched as if someone was a couple of stairs higher than me. It was so intense that I had to leave the house. Another time when we were sleeping in this house; I had got into bed and my partner was in the bathroom when the bedroom door slowly swung shut. I have never seen it do this before or since. Another time when I had gone in to clean; I went upstairs and was just going into one of the bedrooms when I felt compelled to look over my shoulder at one of the other rooms. I saw what I can only describe as a pink blobby outline of a figure. I think it was female, but it was only there for a few seconds. I was staring hard at it thinking what the hell is that? But just as I was beginning to make sense of the shape it seemed to slip sideways behind the door ... This was the same position that my partner saw his Victorian trio!
Oh, another thing that we both experienced was late one night. We were standing at the bottom of the stairs checking the electric meter cupboard which had just been built. Suddenly from upstairs there was a God almighty crash. It was so loud I can't tell you! When we went up to check it out, we found that a light bulb had dropped out of a ceiling light onto a chipboard floor. Amazingly it was still in one piece, and it still worked, which just seemed incredible for the noise it made! We often used to go into that house and find a light was on, and after it happened a few times we always made sure we would double check that we didn't leave any on. But subsequently it happened many more times.
