We are a small team of believers in the paranormal who would like to share our findings with you; and who welcome your views and input. Our main goal in setting up this site is to be able to analyze ghost cam captures in depth, and to be able to find irrefutable evidence of the paranormal. At the moment, we are hosting eleven ghost cams, ten located on Isle of Wight (Ghost House Cams), and the BBC Ghost Cam at Llancaiach Frawr Manor. Whether you are a believer or not, we value your opinion. All we ask is that you enter with an open mind. But remember... an open mind works both ways! As intelligent beings, it is just as important not to jump to the 'ghost' conclusion, as it is to be open to the unexplainable. Bearing that in mind, it is our wish that we can gently and steadily move further towards knowledge, understanding and the truth.
This site is dedicated to all our ancestors and friends past. We hope you can gently guide us in the direction of wisdom.

Haunted by the Hag? |

 You wake up, or think you do and stare into the darkness of your room. The familiar objects are there, but you feel strange. You hear strange sounds and noises, and you see a dark shape hovering over you. This is when you realize you can’t move, breathe or scream! In total panic, you struggle to let in some fresh air, and even as you try, the sensation that something is on your chest or strangling you is very strong. Then in a few seconds it’s all over, you can breathe and you sit up in bed rather quickly, visibly shaken from the experience.
What I’ve described above is known as the ‘Old Hag Syndrome’. Those of you who have experienced it know the real terror it signifies and probably wish they hadn’t. Not all of the experiences are the same. Most of them include weird noises or smells and strange shapes. Nearly all of them hold the terror of being completely paralyzed while your brain is completely awake, so you are conscious of what is happening to you. Worse of all are the times when you cannot breathe, even when you try to. The shapes you see may be vague or may seem to be very real.
Jessica writes: “The one time I did experience this was awful. I lived in an apartment, and my bed directly faced a corridor into the living room. When I woke up unable to move or scream, what I saw was so terrifying, I couldn’t believe it. Directly across from me were candles burning on the floor, and a coffin. A dark shape was hovering over it and gradually got closer to me. I struggled to move and when I finally was able to break free, the candles, coffin and dark shape were gone. I could breathe and sat there in the dark sweating.”
The Old Hag Syndrome is explained by doctors as Sleep Paralysis. When we sleep, we fall into an hour and a half of a non-REM stage, where we don’t dream. This is followed by deep REM sleep, where we dream and our eyelids move and twitch as we follow the dream. At this moment, we are paralyzed (and this is normal) simply because if we weren’t, we would hurt our loved ones or ourselves (imagine hitting or scratching yourself, or your partner, for example, as your legs or arms move about). So the body simply corrects this by falling into a state of semi-paralysis. When Sleep Paralysis occurs your brain wakes up in the REM stage, but your body is still in the semi-paralyzed state. Your eyes can be open or half-closed and you can see the room and the objects in the room, but you can also see all these other things which are explained by doctors as hallucinations caused by the dream world you are/were in.
According to doctors, Sleep Paralysis occurs only when we are very stressed or when we have been experiencing insomnia for a period of time. There are certain rules to follow to avoid Sleep Paralysis which are living a healthy life and developing good sleeping habits. Even though this may explain nearly all the cases of Sleep Paralysis, the fact remains that the experience is very terrifying to us. However, there are cases where bruises and scratches appear on the bodies of those who are semi-paralyzed. How to explain this if you supposedly can’t move?
There are, of course, other kinds of Sleep Paralysis where people think they are being visited, abducted or scrutinized by aliens while in a semi-paralyzed state. Stephanie writes: “My ‘episode’ of sleep paralysis happened many years ago when I was living with my mother for a very brief period of time while I was between apartments.
It was very typical what happened, though I still have to wonder if I was fully asleep, especially considering events that happened mere weeks prior…but could also be why I thought I saw what I did.
I went to bed as usual and read for a bit, then lay on my stomach to go to sleep and faced out into the room. It was warm out, so I had all the windows wide open, including the sky light and was watching the shadows play on the walls as I thought of things in my life before I closed my eyes to go to sleep. Almost immediately I saw a bright flash, well my eyes were closed so it looked red, the way things do when your eyes are closed and you look at a bright light.
When I opened my eyes I saw several tall, thin figures standing around my bed, two at the foot, three or four around the other side (the bed was pushed up against a wall). It was then that I realized I couldn’t move, when I tried to lift my head. I felt no malice from them, but was of course afraid. Almost it seemed to me like they had been there before, a very long time ago when I was a child (in the same room no less). They only stood and watched me curiously, it seemed, and though I couldn’t see their faces, they certainly didn’t seem human to me. Their limbs were too long, heads too elongated and I just had a strong sense that they weren’t human.
Scared, I closed my eyes and childishly willed them away, but when I opened my eyes they were still there. By now I was very frightened, I couldn’t move, these strange beings are in my room, pretty unsettling. I thought one reached out to touch me, but I closed my eyes again and tried to make myself small, both in body and in my mind and kept them closed. I felt a breeze and then they were gone.”
Sleep Paralysis: Our nightmares taking a life of their own? Our fears and terrors taking shape in the dark and blotting out normal objects in the room? Can all this REALLY be a sleeping condition explained away by medical science? Or is there a very small percentage of cases where people actually do come into contact with visitors from an unseen world? |

EVP and Ouija Boards |

“Is there anybody here?” the voice whispered into the darkness, as the group sat huddled in a circle waiting for an answer from beyond. Nobody spoke.
How many times have we heard this question in séances? Certainly that question is the one that everyone uses while attempting communication with the after-life. The fact is that spirit communication has been attempted for a long time now. Séances were performed by mediums and people usually joined hands, forming a circle around a table. Other kinds of séances introduced letters around a light object or planchette in the center of the table which could be moved around pointing to different letters to spell out the answers. “Yes” and “No” were also included in the layout, in case the spirits didn’t know or want to spell. This form of communicating was the early precursor of the “Ouija Board”. In fact, the name ‘Ouija’ (oui-ja), literally means “yes” in French and German respectively. Nobody really remembers that the board itself was first created by William Fuld in the eighteen hundreds, who later sold his entire company to the Parker Brothers.
Then if you take a look at the Ouija Board in itself, a question comes to mind: What is it about this board that makes it so nefarious? Surely it’s not the Parkers Brothers (now a subsidiary of Hasbro) trademark at the bottom? When I hear all these stories of Ouija boards being dangerous, I think about where I bought it, on a shelf right next to Risk and Monopoly in a toy store and wonder if the people selling it as a toy truly know anything about the board itself?
Before you take the time to think about this (and a series of other questions I’m pondering about in this article), let me introduce you to another scenario. A person standing in the middle of a dark room or area, holding a digital or analog recorder in his hand. The room is very dark, and the only light comes from a video camera. “Is there anybody here?” he asks, peering into the darkness. Doesn’t this question ring a bell? Replace the board and planchette with a digital/analog recorder and you have the same scenario. And this scenario, simply put, is spirit communication. We are doing the same thing using different tools. This is also true of automatic writing, as well.
So why is it that we aren’t seeing warning signs and words like evil when we capture an EVP (Electronic Voice Phenomena/Phenomenon) on a digital recorder if we are basically doing the same thing as a Ouija board? Isn’t a Ouija board simply a tool used to communicate with spirits? What is it about Ouija boards that set alarm bells ringing? Don’t we basically ask the same questions when on an investigation using a digital recorder?
When I googled for “Ouija board”, I got some pretty interesting information that I’d like to share with you all. The first thing that caught my interest was the fact that most people were afraid to use it because of what they’ve read online. Let's face it, there are some pretty scary stories out there! Ouija boards have also been used in literature as well. Pulitzer Prize winner James Merrill claims that “The Changing Light at Sandover” published in 1982 was written based on his communications with the dead by using a Ouija board. ‘Paranormal celebrities’ such as psychic Sylvia Brown and paranormal researcher John Zaffis warn us to stay away from Ouija boards. Last but not least, there’s Hollywood, and all the horror movies where Ouija boards were featured as a communication tool used by the devil, elementals and vengeful spirits. No wonder people think the board is evil!
So where is the angry mob that screams evil when it comes to using digital/analog recorders to capture EVP then? Does all this mean that because we use an electronic gadget we are protected from the devil, elementals or evil spirits? Why is it that there aren’t any wide-spread stories about people in mental asylums who have gone crazy after using their recorders to capture EVP? What is the factor that instills fear here? I, for one, have no answers to all this.
The fact is that automatic writing, EVP captures and Ouija boards all fall into one category in my book, and that is SPIRIT COMMUNICATION. ALL these things are used to try to effectively communicate with spirits or the after-life and none of them are evil or bad for us. The thing that makes something bad is the way we use or abuse it. If we use these tools excessively and blindly, we are playing with fire. If we ignore common sense and develop a fixation for one of them, then we are in true danger. For the mind can play games on us and cause us to hear or see what is not there.
Ah, you say, but I have proof that Ouija boards are evil! Something bad happened to a friend of a friend who used it! Or maybe you've experienced something terrifying when using a Ouija board yourself? If so, I invite you to please send your Ouija board stories and experiences to me (Pattyhap1863@aol.com) and I will publish them here on the site. This will be an ongoing online experiment to statistically record the number of positive, negative and neutral experiences from people who submit their stories to the email address previously mentioned. Then you can decide for yourself if the Ouija board is really an evil tool or not.
